On May 9, 2019 at the Chapel Hill Public Library a live audience joined us for our 2019 listening room: In Sickness and Health. This live audio event featured the five finalists from our 2019 Sonic South audio competition. Producers were asked to use a curated list of SOHP interviews to create a short audio documentary on the theme, In Sickness and In Health.
Highlighting our major research project, Stories to Save Lives: Health, Illness, and Medical Care in the South, producers chose from interviews with Southerners about healthcare in their own lives, in their families, and in their communities. Each entry had to (1) be no longer than three minutes in length, (2) incorporate themes of health, illness, or medical care in the American South, and (3) use at least two different voices from a curated collection of SOHP oral history interviews. Our judges included Writer and performer Sonny Kelly, and Audio Under the Stars Co-founders Elizabeth Friend and Jenny March, and North Carolina Folklife content producer and co-host of She and Her Radio, Sandra Davidson.
Below are the top five finalists that were aired during our live listening room. The work of the semi-finalists follow.
